This page will help you get to Tsukuba (specifically Tsukuba Station or Tsukuba Bus Terminal, also known as "Tsukuba Center"). All fares are one way. If you wish to have your luggage sent to your apartment/hotel, there are several forwarding agencies at the airport, with many outlets near the arrival gate. In addition, some airlines provide free baggage pickup and delivery.

From Tsuchiura, Arakawa-oki, Hitachi no Ushiku

Bus (Kanto Tetsudo)

Take a Kanto Tetsudo Bus from any of these stations to Tsukuba Center. Note that the frequency of buses varies according to the station and the time.

From Mito

Train (Joban Line) and Bus (Kanto Tetsudo)

Take the Joban line from Mito to Tsuchiura, Arakawa Oki, or Hitachi no Ushiku. Take a Kanto Tetsudo Bus from one of those stations to Tsukuba Center.

Bus (TM Liner)

Take the TM Liner from Mito to Tsukuba Center.

From Ueno Station

Train (Joban Line) and Bus (Kanto Tetsudo)

Take the Joban line from Ueno to Tsuchiura, Arakawa Oki, or Hitachi no Ushiku. Take a Kanto Tetsudo Bus from one of those stations to Tsukuba Center.

From Tokyo Station

Bus (Joban Express)

Take Joban Express bus from the Yaesu South exit of Tokyo Station to Tsukuba Center.

From Akihabara Station

Train (Tsukuba Express)

Take Tsukuba Express from Akihabara to Tsukuba.

  • Time: 45 min to 57 min depending on speed of train
  • Cost: 1150 yen

From Narita Airport (Int'l)

Bus (Airport Liner NATT's)

Take the Tsukuba-Narita Airport Bus from Narita Airport to Tsukuba Center.

  • Time: Approx. 100 min
  • Cost: 2540 yen (adult), 1270 yen (child)

Train (Narita Express) and Bus (Joban Express)

Take the Narita Express train from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station. Then take the Joban Express bus from Tokyo Station to Tsukuba Center.

  • Time: Narita Express 53 min, Joban Express Bus approx. 80 min
  • Cost: Narita Express 2940, Joban Express Bus 1250 yen

Train (Keisei Skyliner, Joban Line) and Bus (Kanto Tetsudo)

Take the Keisei Skyliner from Narita Airport to Nippori. Take the Joban line from Nippori to Tsuchiura, Arakawa Oki, or Hitachi no Ushiku. Take a Kanto Tetsudo (Kantetsu) bus from one of those stations to Tsukuba Center.

  • Time: Keisei Skyliner 51 min, Joban Line 55-65 min, Kanto Tetsudo Bus approx. 30 min
  • Cost: Keisei Skyliner 1920 yen, Joban Line 950-1110 yen, Kanto Tetsudo Bus approx. 500 yen

Bus and Train (JR Narita Line, Joban Line) and Bus (Kanto Tetsudo)

Take the bus from Narita Airport to Narita Station. Take the JR Narita Line from Narita Station to Abiko. Take the JR Joban line from Abiko Station to Tsuchiura, Arakawa Oki, or Hitachi no Ushiku. Take a Kanto Tetsudo (Kantetsu) bus from one of those stations to Tsukuba Center.

The airport is about 40km from Tsukuba, so you can take a taxi, but it will be expensive.

From Haneda Airport (Domestic)

Bus (Haneda Limousine Bus)

Take the Tsukuba-Haneda Airport Bus from Narita Airport to Tsukuba Center.

  • Time: 80-110 minutes to Tsukuba, 90-120 minutes to Haneda, Depends on traffic
  • Cost: 1800 yen (adult), 900 yen (child), (as of Jan 1, 2003)

Train (Tokyo Monorail, Yamanote Line, Joban Line) and Bus (Kanto Tetsudo Bus)

Take the Tokyo Monorail from Haneda airport to Hamamatsu-cho. Take the JR Yamanote Line from Hamamatsu-cho to Ueno. Take the JR Joban Line from Ueno to Tsuchiura/Arakawa-oki/Hitachinoushiku. Take a Kanto Tetsudo bus from one of those stations to Tsukuba Center.

  • Time: Tokyo Monorail approx. 25 min, JR Yamanote Line approx. 12 min, JR Joban Line 60-70 min, Kanto Tetsudo Bus approx. 30 min

The airport is about 60km from Tsukuba, so you can take a taxi, but it will be expensive.
