Eligibility

Any child who is registered as a foreign resident of the City may enter elementary or junior high school at any time. A "Notice for School Attendance" will be sent to the children of the appropriate age. Please contact the Board of Education if any of the following occur.

  • When the "Notice for School Attendance" does not come to you.
  • When you wish to delay the enrollment of your child because of sickness or any other reason.
  • When you wish to send your child to a national or private school.
  • When you change your address. (move-out , move-in , or change the residence)
  • When you wish to send your child to a school for special education

There is also an international school with an English-based curriculum.

Designated Schools

The school your child will attend is decided by considering the route the child must take to get to the school and the city's school zones (based on address). If your child cannot enroll in his or her designated school for any of the following reasons, please contact the School Affairs Division.

  • Planning to move away from Tsukuba or overseas before the end of March
  • Planning to move to another part of Tsukuba before the end of March
  • Planning to enroll child in private, national, or special needs school.
  • Filled out forms to change designated school.
  • Child cannot be enrolled in school for another reason.

School Zones

You may not change your official address in order to enroll your child in a different school. If you do this and it is discovered, your child will be moved to the appropriate school, even if he or she has already enrolled in the other school zone.

Financial Support

Every year, a certain amount of financial support is made available to parents who are having trouble paying for all the necessary school supplies. If your income is not stable, you are a single parent, or you are having other kinds of financial difficulties, please let your child's teacher know and then pick up an application for aid at the school or the School Division. Hand the application form and supporting documents in to the school. The financial aid can cover expenses such as study supplies, commuting supplies, lunch fees, school trip fees, fees for extra-curricular activities, certain medical expenses, etc. Contact the School Affairs Division.

Terms to Semesters

Please note that the schools in Tsukuba will be changing from a three term system to a two semester system as of April 2005. The first term will start on April 1 and finish on the second Monday in October. The second term will start on the day after the second Monday in October and continue until March 31.
