Difference between Kindergarten and Nursery School?

Children go to nursery school while their parents work. Kindergarten is a precursor to regular school. Nursery schools have longer operating hours to help working parents. Kindergartens are generally limited to 4 hours per day (some offer extended care), as children of that age cannot study longer than that in a day.

Kindergartens are only for 4 and 5 year olds.

Applying for Kindergartens (Apr 2006 to Mar 2007 School Year)

November 1, 2, 4, 2005

Children born between April 2, 2001 and April 1, 2002 (4 yr olds) and between April 2, 2000 and April 1, 2001 (5 yr olds) are eligible to attend kindergarten. This year's monthly fee for kindergarten was 4000 yen (may change next year). The application process will take place from 9am to 4:30pm at each kindergarten. Take your child directly to the kindergarten for an interview. Bring your official seal (inkan) and your alien registration card. The application forms are available at the kindergartens. (Note: Mase Kindergarten will merge with Shimana.) Contact School Affairs Division.

Please note:

  1. The number of 5 year olds admitted depends on the number of 4 year olds who continue from the previous year.
  2. There may be some changes in the number of places available.

Extra Day Care at Kindergartens

From April 2004, Tsukuba Kindergarten, Namiki Kindergarten, and Iwasaki Kindergarten will provide extra day care for the pre- and post-school hours. The service will start at 7:30am (until the school opens) and finish at 6:30pm (starting when the school closes). This will not affect the hours of students who will not be staying for extra day care. Kindergarten buses will continue to run at the usual hours, so students can take just the morning bus or just the afternoon bus, as necessary. All students who attend these three schools are eligible. Contact the School Affairs Division at 029-883-1111 or the schools (Tsukuba 029-867-1552, Namiki 029-851-5338, Iwasaki 029-876-2460).
