Tsukuba and Shenzhen signed an official friendship agreement on June 9, 2004, although the two cities have had amicable relations for over 10 years. Shenzhen is in the Guangdong Province, which is on the south coast of China, near Hong Kong. It was labelled a "designated economic zone" which helped it to attract industries such as high-tech, information, consulting, finance, and transportation. It has a population of 6,435,000 (similar to Saitama Prefecture) and it covers an area of about 1952 km2 (similar to Tokyo).
